Green Home Certification Levels
If you’re considering building or buying a green-built home in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC area, you may already have some ideas about what should be included. Or maybe you just know that a green home is healthier, better for the environment and lower-maintenance than a standard home, but you want to know more about the details.
There are five green home certification programs in North Carolina, each with its own level and specification of “greenness”. In the Research Park Triangle, you’ll most likely see certification through the Green Home Builders of the Triangle program.
Bronze, Silver, or Gold Standards
Three basic levels of certification can be attained by meeting a minimum number of individual attributes, each of which is assigned a point value. Bronze is the most affordable way to effectively and holistically weave green building options into every step of construction, but Silver and Gold have additional qualifications that may be important for the type of green home you’d like to live in.
Nearly any home plan can be built green. They need to be certified, by local third party inspectors and innovators such as award-winning Southern Energy Management. A free building cost estimate from Stanton Homes for a specific floor plan can help you get started with the budgeting process.
Each of the seven guidelines must be met, with varying values assigned to each. Here’s how that looks, in the GHBT program.

A bronze home must earn a total of 257 points, silver must earn 415 points, and gold must earn 549 points.
Green Building Options Vary
Point values can be made from a multitude of combinations, with hundreds of green options. Some lots, neighborhoods, and floor plans qualify one way, while others can become more environmentally friendly in other ways. Contact us, and we’ll help you get started in understanding the process.
